Dragon Fist's Friends and Family:
Grandfather Mattew's grandfather imigrated to the US from China shortly after World War Two. Although he liked living in the US, he clung to the old traditions and culture. Since Matthew was born into a household that emphasized America over China, the old man took it upon himslef to give Mattew an appreciation for their heretige. The two live in an apartment over the old man's restaurant. The sterotype of an older Chinese man fits Matthew's grandfather well. He doesn't say much, but when he does, his speech is accented and full of obscure, obtuse sayings. Although somewhat wrinkled, he still is quite spry and likes to take walks. Occasionally, he needles Matthew about the absence of a woman in the younger man's life. Gang Leader Matthew's superhero career brought him into conflict with Chinatown gangs early on.. He found that many were deeply involved in illegal activites including extortion, drugs, and theft. Not all, however, followed this paradigm. On group, the Crimson Tigers, made an effort to steer clear of the more serious offenses. While still involved in the occasional minor vandalism or fighting, the Crimson Tigers typically stay out of trouble. They have worked with Dragon Fist on a few occasions, sharing information about the ebb and flow of street and gang life. They've found the hero to be quite useful in annoying rival gangs, although the Tigers are careful to only point the hero towards gangs who are actually involved in crime (this isn't too difficult). The leader of the Tigers, Kevin Luk, secretly admires the hero, although he considers Dragon Fist to be too lenient on the hard-core criminals. Chinatown Official Dragon Fist made a reluctant ally of a prominant Chinatown politician when he rescued the man from a Tong hit squad. The politico does not like vigilantes, but he now has a debt of honor to the hero, and realizes that Dragon Fist could be useful. He will help the hero on occasion, albiet grudgingly. He's still concerned about the Tongs, and realizes that keeping a superhero as an ally could be useful if the crime syndicate becomes active again. Kung Fu Master Matthew's instructor in Kunf Fu, or Sifu, is an old friend of his grandfather's. The two older men met on the ship they took to America, and have remained fairly close ever since. The sifu knows of Matthew's gift, and teaches him the discipline of Kung Fu as a means to control and channel that power. The sifu knows Shaolin Dragon Style, and has taught this to Matthew. He also knows a few of the more esoteric arts of Kung Fu, and has begun teaching those to Matthew. The sifu has a school located on the edge of Chinatown. Although many of his students are Chinese in ethnicity, he also has many western students. Matthew is, by far, his most gifted student, and occassionally teaches the less advanced classes. The sifu has recognized that Matthew's powers correspond closely to those who practice the legendary Resplendant Dragon Kung Fu. The only school for this, however, is burried in the mountains of western China. The sifu has not informed Matthew of this yet, for he believes that Matthew must first master his current art to be acceptable to those of the Resplendant Dragon. Fellow Student, Mark Burton Mark is a graduate student who was forced to get a job because of his grad school requirements. The guy at student employment - who didn't really like him - sent him to work for Cassandra Salvatore, who's turn-arround rate on secretaries is incredibly high. Mark has been doing well in this job, dispite his somewhat eccentric boss (who happens to be the superheroine Oddessey). Mark is very hard to startle, and this helps signifigantly with his current job. Like all grad students Mark is abused by his college to do menial work. He has a big interest in Asian history and culture, thus the job at the museum. He is a grad student in Asian studies, with a minor in Chinese language. Mark also studies under Dragon Fist's sifu, and is a close friend of Matthew. The two have similar philosphies on life, and Mark occasionally gets into trouble because of this. He is someone who likes to protect the underdog and believes there is a definite right and wrong in life. Mark lives in a three-bedroom apartment/house near the college that he shares with two other guys. It's got this really ugly green carpet- but they don't care because the place is usually in a state of perpetual mess. Mark is totally confident in everything, but this fellow grad student he has a crush on. He just can't bring himself to ask her out. The result is that Matthew Chu-Wun and the rest of the people Mark Burton knows, continualy give him advice on what to do. Computer Industry Matthew's software business has given him contacts throughout the computer industry. Rather than any single person, this is a network, each person a specialist in a limited area of the business. These are people who Mattew has done business with, and they know nothing about Dragon fist, except what they read in the papers. While willing to help Matthew, they will expect a quid pro quo in the future. Reporter Dragon Fist has a working relationship with a reporter in the Bay area He provides her with leads on hot stories in Chinatown, and she shares info about the world outside Chinatown's borders. The reporter, while usually very helpful, is often busy and hard to find at times. |
