Elaine was born July 7, 1969, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was
the third of five children (Alex, Gwen, Elaine, Bryan, and Terry),
and was the classic middle child. Alex was the brain, Gwen was
the beauty. Bryan and Terry were the boys and the babies. Elaine
was largely ignored.
The family was well off. Andrea MacArthur, Elaine's mother, was
an assistant D.A., and her father Alexander was an advertising
executive. Elaine went through school with her grades never quite
as good as Alex's, not quite as pretty as Gwen. And so, never
really knowing what she would do, she majored in psychology in
college and joined the FBI after graduation.
She loved it. Elaine developed a knack for understanding
the most tweisted criminal mids and predicting their next moves.
She solved dozens of the "unsolved" cases more experienced
agents had given up on. She quickly earned the enmity of these
agents, who were embarrassed by her successes, and she was partnered
with one of the FBI's most notorious agents, a man with a reputation
for coming up with bizarre UFO and conspiracy theories.
Her rival's ploy worked, and Elaine was discredited at the FBI,
her talent wasted. Chessmen, however, saw a good mind and adept
agent material, and soon Elaine MacArthur was "killed"
in a tragic auto accident. After training, however, Chessmen had
a new Knight of the Crown.
Elaine adapted well to life at Square One, and has made friends
in almost all of the departments. She cooks for the Pawns, and
goes dancing with the Jennifer, the wildest of the Bishops. She
still doesn't know who put rose petals in her suite, although
she's installed a security device which utilizes recently captured
force field technology. Her personal computer at Square One sports
128 Megs of RAM she liberated from a VIPER computer on a
recent mission. More than anything else, she would like to have
a dog, but the Rooks won't let her.
Off-time: Elaine loves bizarre theatre (she minored in theatre
in college), and has dragged the new Rook at Square One, Jason
Johnson, to a modern production of Hamlet. She also dragged him
to the dog show at Madison Square Garden, but he still didn't
let her have a dog. Flirting outrageously didn't help either.
She's also taken Tom and Jerry to a show which involved garbage
and dancing, but none of the three ever figured the plot out.
Personality Quirks (concept borrowed from GURPS): Each worth
a point of disadvantage, only five allowed:
- Cooks for Pawns
- Wears Silk
- Goes to Wacky Shows
- Goes to Highland Games
- Wants a Dog
