Background: It was a cool down mission that was supposed to be quick and easy. Repair a downed MilStar communications satellite and come home. However, upon reaching orbit, the clamshell doors on the bay of the shuttle refused to open. DJ was the one who was to work on it. During his extra-vehicular activity (EVA) an unannounced proton event occurred, bombarding the shuttle, and DJ, with charged particles and radiation. While the members on board were fine, with the Shuttle’s excellent shielding, DJ was exposed to more than five times the amount of radiation recommended by the U.S. government in a years time span. Ignoring the bay doors, the crew was directed to abort the mission, and return to Earth as soon as possible. Upon landing, each member was subjected to intense tests, but none more so than DJ. Yet the tests came up negative. Where DJ should have been suffering from the effects, he was in picture perfect health. Stunned and confused, NASA was uncertain as to what was going to happen to DJ. Being afraid of a possibility for future complications, NASA decided to remove DJ from the active pilot roster. He was shuffled to a desk job. There he would remain, never to fly again. However, DJ couldn’t stand to work for NASA and never fly another mission. Rather than that torture, he resigned and retired from the Air Force. NASA provided him with a generous bonus, in addition to his retirement bonus, thereby setting DJ up for life. Now that he was retired, DJ needed to find direction. It was while visiting the Smithsonian Institute that he hit the next major bump in his life. During a visit to the precious gems exhibit, a supervillain named Blackstar broke into the place and began stealing the gems. Blackstar was extremely aggressive, and stood there throwing around security guards and gem cases alike. DJ, in an effort to protect an elderly couple, felt a large case smash against his back. Strange, but while he felt the impact he felt no pain. Shrugging this off as adrenaline, he took advantage of the situation and turned, striking a very surprised Blackstar. Stunned, the villain was unable to protect himself from the onslaught of the enraged DJ. DJ was stunned when his foe fell before him. He looked down and saw he had grown a good six inches, grew in girth, and had turned gray! Surprised, confused, and just a bit frightened, DJ fled the scene immediately. Minutes later, members of the Hudson Hawks arrived to take Blackstar into custody. With the rumors of a new superhero who fled the scene they decided to keep an eye on this newcomer. DJ went home to think. It took some time, but he finally figured out that he could control his molecular density, thereby increasing his strength, and toughening his body. Convinced that there was a reason he had these powers, DJ went on a spree of stopping petty crime. A purse snatcher here, an AM/PM Mini-mart robbery there, and others. However, he fought no more paranormals. It was when word reached him that Blackstar had escaped, vowing ‘Revenge upon that punk who sucker-punched me!" Fearing for those around him, and uncertain as to his methods, DJ decided to make a change to his life. He consolidated his affairs, picked up and moved to the West Coast. Once there, he contacted two old Air Force buddies, Jim Maclevoy and John Davidovitch, and decided to open an instructor school. With some of his compensation from NASA, he and the two friends bought three small planes, leased a spot at the airport, and opened up the Gateway to the Sky flight school. Powers/Tactics: Appearance: As Proteus, his body grows to 6’6, and weight varies on level of density increase (usually null with flight). His skin turns gray, with a surface similar to granite, but with the smoothness of marble. His face becomes very chiseled, and his eyes turn dark gray, almost black. His suit is black spandex, with a white atomic symbol upon his chest, with red atoms at each of the extremes. He wears boots gloves with read trim. His suit extends above his head, covering his face in a half mask. Personality/ Motivation: Known HauntsDJ can typically be found at the Gateway to the Sky Flight School, at home with his lab watching "Friends," or out on the town. |
